Simply The Best!

Does the name Napoleon McCallum mean anything to you?  Well in 1994 he was injured in the first Monday Night Football game of the season (Raiders vs. 49ers).  That injury will forever live in infamy in my head, as I remember my friends and I being floored while watching the instant replay over and over again.  If you haven’t guessed by now, JerzeeChick loves sports!  Treacherous injuries, great feats of scoring, stupendous dunks, and Cinderella teams MAKE MY DAY!  I participate in no less than three fantasy football leagues a year.  I do fantasy basketball, and I am ashamed to say how many brackets I have floating around during March Madness.  I live for playoff games (NBA and NFL), I love college basketball *go Terps*, and I’ve been known to follow soccer every now and then (Manchester United all day every day)!  Because I’m an avid sports fan, this week was particularly hard for me.  The NBA finals ended, Tiger is on “injured reserve”, and baseball just doesn’t excite like other sports.  I root for the Yankee’s. I boo the Braves, but other than that I am not interested J

I am not a real fan of golf, but who doesn’t root for Tiger Woods?  Before he stepped on the scene, people weren’t really checking for golf.  Now he has spawned a generation of golfers and golf fans.  No one can touch him, but pound for pound is Tiger simply the best athlete to ever play ANY GAME?  When we look at his career in its entirety, and all that he has accomplished in such a short time, is there any athlete out there as good?  I guess I will give Tiger the golf crown hands down, and look at other sports individually.

Peyton Manning and Michael Vick broke records, but are they better than Joe Montana?  Bill Russell has won more NBA championship rings than any other player, and I doubt if we’ll see that record broken in our lifetime.  Some say Jordan is the best to ever play the game of basketball, but others say Kobe Bryant or maybe LeBron James will eventually surpass him.  Muhammad Ali was the greatest, but before Mike Tyson went crazy, was he on par to surpass Ali?  Venus and Serena brought those beads to the Grand Slam tournaments and upset a lot of folks!  When they are at the top of their game, they are unstoppable, but are they the best?

When it comes to teams, I think those 1990 Running Rebels from UNLV played some of the most exciting NCAA basketball I’ve ever seen in my life.  Of course nothing is more exciting than the last quarter of this year’s super bowl!  Did I mention I hate the New England Patriots?  All year we heard how the Patriots were the best team to ever play the game of football……but when it was all on the line they couldn’t beat Big Blue *go Giants* .  If you almost make it to the mountaintop, are you still the best?  If Kobe never wins a ring without Shaq, does that mean he’ll never truly be the best?  The “simply the best” statement is very relative!  I think Serena is better than Venus.  Walter Payton will always be my favorite back, and yes I chose Kobe over Shaq!

As I twiddle my thumbs and research the hottest rookie’s drafted by the NFL this year (never too soon to start scouting picks for the fantasy drafts), I’d like you to complete this sentence for me: (BLANK) is simply the best to ever play the game of (BLANK)!

  1. Michael Jordan is the best player to ever play basketball ! No one is better PERIOD!!!!
Also I googled that McCullem guy. OMG…. I could not stand to watch. The clip kept showing the hit over and over. Even the commentators felt his pain. I guess if I had seen that happen back in 94 I’d remember it too.

  2. Wow JC this blog was very impressive, I didn’t know how BIG of a sports fan you are. Very sexy!!! We should talk one day we have a lot in common.(ok focus Mr. Wolf) Well TIGER gets my vote for the best athlete ever, and I declared that before this years US OPEN. He was simply amazin’. I was just watching Sport Center and they recently found out that he was playing with a fractured leg on top of the knee sprain. It’s hard for non golfer to realize his greatness. TIGER is the Bestest athlete ever. Now Kobe is no Michael, as we all saw on Tuesday evening. I also think he’s a sucka MC so I was so happy to see him lose. I really don’t like how he’s handled some of the locker room situations and the whole Denver debacle. He the best on the court these days, but I just don’t think he’s a good dude. The Williams sister are outstanding, I think they will surpass all records in their sports. Sweetness is also my favorite Running Back, there was a class about that brother that made you love him. His work ethic is still unmatched. When he died, because he didn’t receive a transplant moved me to become an organ donor. Real talk.

THe Patriots are cheaters, I have real problem with the Spy Gate thing. Anyway go GIANTS, I’m still in my Super Bowl swag!!!!

My favorite NCAA team might have been the Fab 5, minus the Chris Webber time out. Baseball… I’ll always root for the Yanks. I still love Track & Field without the drugs, steroids are messing everything up. Great blog JC, not girly at all, you need more mens topics like this.

  6. Great BLOG – JC…I also enjoyed this. I was the lonely star against Giants & Dallas and I still deal with the comments & my only response is “We beat U when it counted”! As for Basketball, I still believe Michael Jordan rules. No one has come close and compares with the etiquette he had while playing and still has, as retired. No one is better but when it comes to his etiquette, I’m in agreement of Ray Allen & Kevin Garnett. As much as I dislike “BOSTON”, I had been routing for them to when from start. Tiger is doing his thing, u have 2 give it to him – injured in ALL. But because I am my father’s daughter, I have to say “Walter Ray Williams, Jr is the best to ever BOWL”. Yep, I said it. It mite not be contact sport but your all alone out there like Tiger & it’s up to you. The money is not great but because that’s the LOVE of my game, I’m sticking to my story! LOL…

  7. Good blog Jerzee chic, I like to see you representing for us women who want to discuss more than which player looks best in spandex and football pads!

    My list of the best….
I love the underdog, so the Boise State come from behind has to be my favorite from recent years, with the Giants upsetting the Patriots as a close second.
Being from GA, the biggest upset was when we finally made it to the Superbowl but just couldn’t bring it home. I think that hurt so much, because I just knew it would be ages before the chance would present itself again.
Best football player has be Barry Sanders….how does one pick up so many yards, on a team with no passing game (duh, I think they are going to give the ball to Barry) and no line for protection. No wonder he retired so soon.
Kobe is the best player in the sport right now, and he is tapping (not yet knocking) on Jordan’s door….but I am not a fan!
    Keep up the good work!

  9. The Williams sisters AND Martina Hingis were simply the best to play tennis.
Pete Sampras on the men’s side but men’s tennis has been real boring since Agassi was last seen in his prime.
Ali was the best at boxing.
Willie Mays was simply the best to play baseball (unassisted by chemical enhancers).
Oh, and Gary Kasparov was simply the best to play chess (although if you said Bobby Fischer I wouldn’t argue all that much).

  10. Muhammad Ali is the Greatest athlete of all time with Tiger Woods a close second… After Tiger career comes to an end he will surpass Ali as the all time greatest athlete.
Golf is an individual sport(w/occasional assistant from the caddie)which means you have no one else to help nor blame. You must be mentally tough as well as physically fit.

Michael Jordan did not win 6 rings by himself he had a considerable amount of help from the “Jordanaiers”.Don’t get me wrong MJ did his thang on the court but bball is a team sport. MJ did not start winning until he realized the imporatnce of “we and not me”.

Tiger has taken the golfing world to a whole new level in which the golfing elite has never witnessed before. I wished that Jack Nicholas was 30yrs younger and still in his prime, Tiger would have destroyed him and he would not own 18 Major championships.
